What Is Curtain Walling?
Curtain walling is a non-structural external wall system that is fixed to the outside of a building's structural frame. Unlike a traditional wall which supports the building above it, a curtain wall carries only its own weight and transfers wind loads back to the main structure through anchors and brackets. This allows architects to create fully glazed facades that flood interiors with natural light.
Types of Curtain Wall Systems
Stick System
The most common type. Aluminium mullions (verticals) and transoms (horizontals) are assembled on site, then glazed with glass or infill panels. Ideal for low to medium-rise buildings and complex geometries.
Unitised System
Factory-assembled panels are delivered to site and craned into position. Faster installation than stick systems, ideal for high-rise buildings where speed and safety are critical. Higher initial cost but shorter programme.
