Aluminium vs UPVC Bifold Doors
Aluminium
Slim sightlines (as narrow as 20mm) maximise glass area and light. Stronger, more rigid frames allow larger panel sizes. Available in any RAL colour. Premium look and feel. Higher cost but superior aesthetics and durability.
UPVC
More affordable entry point. Wider sightlines (typically 50-70mm). Good thermal performance. Limited colour range compared to aluminium. Best for budget-conscious projects where slim sightlines aren't critical.
Choosing Your Configuration
Bifold doors fold to one side, both sides, or can include a traffic door for everyday access without opening the full set. Key decisions include:
- Number of panels: 2 to 7 panels depending on opening width
- Fold direction: Left, right or split from centre
- Traffic door: A single door that opens independently — highly recommended for daily use
- Threshold: Standard, low or flush options for accessibility
- Colour: Match your existing windows and doors, or create a feature contrast
Thermal Performance
Modern bifold doors achieve excellent thermal performance with U-values as low as 1.3 W/m²K for double-glazed and 0.9 W/m²K for triple-glazed units. This meets and exceeds current Building Regulations requirements.
Do Bifold Doors Need Planning Permission?
In most cases, no. Replacing an existing window or door with bifold doors is classified as permitted development. However, planning permission may be required in conservation areas, for listed buildings, or if you're creating a new opening in an external wall.
